Manchester: Idris Khan - The Devil's Wall

If you enjoyed, or missed, the British Museum's Hajj: Journey to the Heart of Islam (reviewed here 19th March), there is still a week left to see a satellite exhibition at the Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester.
The installation The Devil's Wall by Idris Khan is inspired by the rituals and practices of the Hajj. The space is dominated by three large black sculptures inscribed with texts from the Q'ran.
Alongside these works are printed works composed of texts from the Q'ran and personal stories collected by Khan; those who visited the British Museum exhibition will recognise Khan's work from the large-scale printed work composed of extracts of testimonies collected from Hajjis. A third group are photographic works based on American minimalist music, which Khan connects with the repetition in Islamic chanting.
The Whitworth is also showing a large digital print of Ahmed Mater's Magnetism, which featured in the British Museum exhibition.
This is powerful work; when I visited I met a lady who was in tears and told me how moved she was.
The exhibition runs until 13th May. For full details, and to hear Khan speaking about his work, and how it relates to the rituals of Hajj, see: www.whitworth.manchester.ac.uk/whatson/exhibitions/idriskhan/
