Two sisters from Bristol have received special honours from the Pope.
Kathleen Keeley and Mary Hingston, both from Clifton, have been presented with 'Bene Merenti' medals from the Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI. The sisters were surprised, during last Sunday in Clifton Cathedral, when, Cathedral Dean, Canon Robert Corrigan, announced that their years of dedication and service to the Catholic Church in Bristol had been recognised by the Pope.
The medals were presented by the Bishop of Clifton Right Reverend Declan Lang. 'Bene Merenti' is translated as 'well deserving'. The papal honour is reserved 'for those who set an exceptional Christian example'.
Canon Robert Corrigan said: "There was loud applause from the congregation when Mary and Kathleen came forward to receive their awards, and it was good to recognise in this very public way all their quiet work they have done over many years both here in Clifton Cathedral as well as in the Pro Cathedral in Park Place."
