US Catholic charities braced as Hurricane Irma approaches
As Hurricane Irma causes widespread destruction across the Caribbean, islands and southern coastal communities in its path are bracing themselves for its onslaught.
Catholic charities in Florida have published comprehensive advice for families, ranging from how to protect their homes, where to shelter, how much food and water to to get, to guidance on caring for pets, reaching public shelters and keeping in touch with family and emergency services. In Miami, schools are closed, and the grand celebration for the feast day of Our Lady of Charity, set for Friday, September 8. In addition, the National Shrine of Our Lady of Charity, known as La Ermita, closed today Thursday, and will remain closed until Hurricane Irma passes the area of South Florida.
