Michael Morpurgo visits west London school
The staff and pupils of St John XXIII Catholic Primary School in White City, west London were treated last week to a special visit by Michael Morpurgo, author of War Horse. Year 6 pupil, Areanne Denzo had won a writing competition through the Lyric Theatre in Hammersmith to have the author come and deliver a special assembly at her school.
Mr Morpurgo read his book 'Cockadoodle Doo, Mr Sultana' to the assembly hall and had both staff and pupils alike enthralled by his captivating retelling of the book. The classes had all been reading some of Mr Morpurgo's famous books and shared with him some of their favourite parts. He then took some questions
from the children and was only too happy to share with them how he got the ideas for his books.
All the children, from nursery to Year 6 were engrossed by every word by the charismatic author.
Head teacher Mrs Karen Cunningham explained: "the children and staff were truly inspired by Mr Morpurgo and keen to read even more of his books".
The lucky price-winner, Areanne from Year 6 was presented with a signed copy of his new book Eagles in the Snow recalled the day she won the
competition. "I felt such a tingle of excitement; I was very proud of myself. I couldn't believe that I had that special winning ticket. It felt
like such an accomplishment. It has been wonderful to finally meet him."
Mr Morpurgo left St John XXIII with the promise of keeping in touch with the school.
