Programme welcomes returning Catholics

Ealing Abbey is hosting another Landings workshop this month to train groups of lay people to welcome back Catholics who have left the Church. Developed by Paulist Fr Jac Campbell, Landings has been running for over ten years in the USA and Canada. Landings was introduced to the UK at Ealing Abbey in 2001. There have also been workshops in the dioceses of Portsmouth, Westminster, Salford and Southwark. "The numbers of non-churchgoing Catholics are staggering" - says co-ordinator Pauline Gilbertson (Landings UK Co-ordinator). "Landings is an example of a simple but highly structured way of drawing people back to the Church. Because it is mainly lay-led it removes a burden from the clergy; the parish priest's participation is only needed for the final Reconciliation Retreat which takes place at the end of a Landings course." She said: "Returning to the Church as part of a group of sympathetic, non-judgemental, lay people also ensures that the returners are befriended and supported even after the course of meetings has finished. Moreover, the 'welcoming' parishioners who take part in the group inevitably find that Landings renews their own spiritual lives." Sessions at Ealing are on Friday June 27, 7-9.30pm and on Saturday June 28, 10am-3.30pm. They will be lead by led by Mrs Joan Horn and Fr James Leachman OSB (Landings UK Director). Individual attendance is possible for a fee of 20 pounds per head; a fee of 250 pounds per parish group buys the materials and licence necessary to run the Landings programme and covers the training for as many parishioners as wish to attend. Further Landings training workshops will take place in the Archdiocese of Liverpool on June 13/14 and in the Diocese of Lancaster on June 20/21.
