North London church to hold vigil for 'Living Ghosts'
Next Monday 19 February, St Ignatius Church in Stamford Hill (London N15) will be holding a Candlelight Vigil for 'Living Ghosts'. This is the name given to failed asylum seekers who are now destitute in Britain after losing all means of support. The vigil will take place in the Church after the 6.30pm Mass, from 7pm until 10pm. "During this time we will watch a short DVD which highlights the issue," says Fr Jim Conway SJ, the parish's Social Outreach Co-ordinator. "We'll also listen to a 'living ghost' - a Rwandan lady who will speak about her current situation in London - and also to Louise Zanre of Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS). This will be interspersed with readings and reflections led by the Justice and Peace Group." The vigil will coincide with a sleep-out in Parliament Square to protest against the measures. This is being organised by The Refugee Council, Amnesty International, Church Action on Poverty and a host of others (including JRS UK). Source: Jesuit Communications Office
