Pope appeals for peace 'in the name of God'
In a dramatic appeal during the Sunday Angelus, at St Peter's, Pope John Paul II called on "all sides, in the name of God" to stop the spiral of "war and death" causing bloodshed in the Holy Land. He said: "In this hour there are unfortunately an abundance of threatening situations, causing anxiousness to all humanity. "It is with profound sadness that I receive painful and preoccupying news from Bethlehem, and also from the city of Beit Jala and Beit Sahour".
