Cardinal Cormac celebrates Mass in Harare - exclusive ICN report

Yesterday, Wednesday 30 January, at 17:30 hrs local time, Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor, Archbishop of Westminster, concelebrated Mass in Harare at the Sacred Heart Cathedral in the centre of the city. He was assisted by Bishop Crispian Hollis of Portsmouth and Archbishop Raymond Ndlove of Mashonaland. Eighteen local priests also concelebrated. Among them were four Redemptorists, including Fr Ronald McAinch CSsR, the long-time superior of the Redemptorists in Zimbabwe, who has recently been appointed as the Provincial of the Redemptorist London Province, which Zimbabwe Redemptorists come under. The Cardinal and his fact-finding team who were in Zimbabwe at the invitation of the Zimbabwe Catholic Bishops Conference, were warmly welcomed by the resident Archbishop who thanked him, among other things, for allowing him to say Mass recently in Westminster Cathedral with a congregation of some 500 Zimbabweans resident around the London area. The Cardinal, in reply, commenting on the visit to Zimbabwe by his team, in his homily made mention of the many Zimbabweans living in the Diaspora, especially those in England. He promised continual prayer for Zimbabwe and its troubles and he asked, in conclusion, that Archbishop Raymond appoint a Chaplain to the Zimbabwean flock in England. The Cathedral was full and Cardinal Cormac commented on the high level of participation of the assembled congregation in the singing of the Mass parts. There was an English and a Shona Choir. Mass lasted 75 minutes.
