Christian Unions welcome launch of secularist societies
Christian Unions at universities in Britain have thanked celebrated atheist Professor Richard Dawkins for once again raising God's public profile and that of faith issues.
And they say they are ready for the professor's latest mission to see secularist societies set up in every university and college campus in the UK over the next 12 months.
Some Christian activists are already planning a campaign in response by distributing 400,000 copies of St John's Gospel around colleges and campuses and holding high profile outreach events to give students the opportunity to talk about God.
The UCCF:thechristianunions, the umbrella organisation for student Christian unions across the country, said the ethologist, evolutionary biologist and author of 'The God Delusion' should be thanked for his efforts both as an author and also a supporter of the recent bus posters proclaiming that God doesn't exist.
"His book was a brilliant platform for Christian Unions on which to host events where the claims about God and Jesus Christ could be openly discussed," said Pod Bhogal, Communications Director at UCCF.
"His bus adverts gave students an opportunity to ask questions about God's existence in a new way, and now his secularist society campaign will excite CUs keen to share their faith and raise the spiritual temperature amongst students."
Mr Bhogal added that the UCCF would be encouraging the National Union of Students to ensure any meetings held by the secularist societies were open to all students to attend whether they have faith or did not have a faith.
