El Salvador: Fiesta in birthplace of Archbishop Oscar Romero

There is immense joy in the small town of El Salvador known as Ciudad Barrios where Oscar Arnulfo Romero was born in 1917. After decades of debate within the Church, Pope Francis formally recognised that Salvadoran Archbishop Oscar Romero was killed 'in hatred of the faith' and not for purely political reasons. Pope Francis signed the decree last Tuesday, February 3, clearing the way for the beatification of Archbishop Romero.

The bells of the only parish in Ciudad Barrios rang until noon, so the few who still knew nothing were able to join in the great joy of the Catholic Church.

"This is our joy," said an elderly lady who stopped in front of the church to pray. Orquídea Larios, a member of the "Monseñor Romero" Museum of this city, said: "We are delighted by the news, now we have to recognize the merit and pray".

The Parish Council is now rushing to repair and renovate their church.
