Vatican to offer haircuts, shaves and showers to homeless ‎

On 15 February, shower facilities for homeless people in Rome will open under the colonnade in St Peter's Square. A group of local barbers and hairdressers have now volunteered their services to offer haircuts and shaves, Archbishop Konrad Krajewski told the Italian Catholic newspaper Avvenire on Thursday.

Archbishop Krajewski, whose official title is the Pope's almsgiver, said the barbers would be available on Mondays, the day their shops are traditionally closed in Italy. The group have already donated chairs, hair-cutting instruments, and mirrors.

Archbishop Krajewski came up with the idea of building showers in St Peter's Square last year after a homeless person told him that while it was relatively easy to find places to eat at various charitable centres, it was difficult to find places to wash. Pope Francis immediately gave his support to the shower project.
