London: Peace campaigners to protest at invasion of Gaza

A huge peace demonstration is scheduled to take place in London later today. Representatives of all faiths will be joining secular peace campaigners to express their concern at the brutal bombing of Gaza which has killed more than 200 people, mostly women and children, and injured thousands more. The death toll is now spiralling as Israel has followed the aerial attack with a land invasion - sending in 8,000 soldiers.

Campaigners are demanding that David Cameron calls for an immediate end to Israel's latest military campaign and that he condemns Israel's decision to escalate the crisis with a dangerous ground offensive. So far the Prime Minister has not commented on the large number of Palestinians killed.

Chris Nineham of Stop the War said: "How much more do the Palestinian people have to suffer? The Israeli government's decision to invade Gaza will ramp up the massacre of Palestinian civilians which they have been conducting over the last ten days. It makes a mockery of their claims of being interested in ceasefire. This is not the act of a government looking for peace, compromise or any agreement."

Marchers are assembling outside Downing Street at 12 noon and will walk to the Israeli Embassy near High Street Kensington.
