Events to commemorate Hiroshima and Nagasaki


The anniversaries of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 will be commemorated in a number of prayer vigils, services and other memorial events across England and Scotland.

6 AUGUST - Anniversary of Hiroshima

In Coventry, on 6 August, there will be an ecumenical Hiroshima & Nagasaki service at 6.30pm in the Chapel of Unity at Coventry Cathedral.

In Kent, a prayer vigil for Hiroshima & Nagasaki will take place Relic Chapel at The Friars, Aylesford on 6 August at 8.20pm Kent.

In London, Annual Pax Christi events for Hiroshima and Nagasaki take place on 6 and 9 August. There will be a prayer vigil and stall each day in the Piazza, in front of Westminster Cathedral, Victoria, from 10am - 5pm with prayer times at 11.30am and 3.30pm.

In Edinburgh, the annual commemoration for Hiroshima takes place at the Mound from 6 - 7pm. Bring candles, songs, poems, banners, friends or just yourself.

In Glasgow, on 6 August, there will be a gathering at the gates of the Botanic Gardens (Queen Margaret Drive) at 6.30pm, before a visit to the peace tree in the park, then a walk on the pavement with peace flags to the peace tree in Kelvingrove Park for a short meeting and a song.

In Paisley a group will gather at 7pm in Glasgow Road car park entrance to Barshaw Park to walk over to the Peace Garden.

Campaigners will meet in Aberdeen at 8.45pm in Fisherman’s Hut to release 200 peace lanterns on the River Dee.

Helensburgh will be floating lanterns off Rhu Spit in Rhu, at 9pm Some lanterns will be available, or you're welcome to bring your own, along with any stories, poems, songs relevant to the occasion.

9 AUGUST - anniversary of Nagasaki 

In London on 9 August at 6.30pm there will be a Memorial Service for Blessed Franz Jaegerstaetter in the Crypt Chapel of Westminster Cathedral. (Entrance via school car park in Ambrosden Avenue.) For more information on the London events call: 0208 203 4884.

In Glasgow on 9 August there will be a Scottish CND Peace Cruise. A two hour cruise on the Clyde Enjoy some live music and find out the latest SCND news and events. Assemble outside Glasgow Science Centre at 6.30pm, departing at 7pm Returning at 9pm. Book your place in advance. Only 45 places available! Ticket: £15/person.
