Wales: Invitation to Day with Blessed John Duns Scotus

Duns Scotus

Duns Scotus

If you have heard of John Duns Scotus it will probably be in connection with the Immaculate Conception of the Mother of God, which he defended and then had to wait four centuries for the church to define it as a doctrine. He is also remembered in the poems of Gerard Manly Hopkins!

But there is more to Scotus than that. Born in 1265 at Duns in Scotland, Blessed John Duns Scotus became a Franciscan Friar and taught in the universities of Paris and Cologne. A great theologian and philosopher, he is a prophet of God’s love who invites us to discover our worth by becoming co-lovers with Christ. He died in 1308 and was beatified by John Paul II.

Like St Bonaventure, Scotus has had a great influence on Benedict XVI: ‘Blessed Duns Scotus teaches us that what is essential in our life is to believe that God is close to us and that He loves us in Christ Jesus and we are witnesses of this love on earth.’ Addressing a group of voluntary workers, the Pope Emeritus also said “There is nothing better or more beautiful that I could put before you than the words of Blessed John Duns Scotus: you are co-lovers with Christ”

This Franciscan Day of Guided Prayer is on 8 March Friday, beginning at 11.30am and including Mass, it ends around 5pm.
