In a great procession linking London’s two Catholic cathedrals, the Blessed Sacrament was carried across the Thames this afternoon (Saturday 20 October).

The Procession, led by Bishop John Sherrington, started at Westminster Cathedral and went down Ambrosden Avenue, crossing the Thames at Lambeth Bridge, and continuing through Southwark to St George’s Cathedral where Benediction took place. A crowd of more than 1,000 people took part, singing hymns and praying the Rosary as they moved slowly along the route.

Canon ChristopherTuckwell of Westminster Cathedral and Canon John O’Toole of St George’s cathedral accompanied Bishop Sherrington as he carried the Blessed Sacrament, along with acolytes, Knights of Our Lady in their ceremonial robes, and Knights of St Columba in their insignia.

This Procession was started in 2011 to mark the first anniversary of Pope Benedict’s visit to London, and the first feast day of Blessed John Henry Newman. It is now established as an annual event.

Among those taking part were members of the St Patrick’s Evangelisation School from Soho Square, members of the South London group of the Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham, members of the Association of Catholic Women, and large numbers of parishioners from both Cathedrals.
