Tenth anniversary of 9/11 marked with prayers and action

The tenth anniversary of the attack on the Twin Towers in New York takes place this Sunday, 11 September 2011. The day has been designated by churches of all denominations as 'Awareness Sunday' - an opportunity for remembrance, reconciliation and better relationships with those of other faiths as we recall the Christian values of love, forgiveness and respect. As believers, we are called to love our neighbours as ourselves, whatever our neighbours' religious faith or worldview.

Many churches will be planning church a special service for peace and reconciliation on this day or include prayers/reflection in the Sunday liturgy.

Ideas for resources can be found at:

- Awareness Sunday www.awarenesssunday.com/

- and Peaceful Tomorrows - www.peacefultomorrows.org/ A website with testimonies and stories that could be used in times of prayer and reflection set up by bereaved families in 2001.

The Campaign Against Arms Trade is also holding a Day of Prayer for peace. This year's Christian Network Day of Prayer will take place on the eve of the Defence & Security Exhibiton (DSEi), one of the world's largest arms fairs, and on a poignant date ten years from the attacks on the twin towers: Many will already be reflecting on the legacy of that day: two illegal wars, increased inter-community tension, and an increasingly militarised approach to security.
