New Visitor Centre at Durham Cathedral
A new Visitor Centre has just opened at Durham Cathedral. The £1.25m centre, based in the former Durham University Almshouse on Owengate, Durham City, offers information about the Cathedral and its cloisters, the Treasures of St Cuthbert, the Venerable Bede, and the Wolfson Gallery in the University's historic Palace Green Library, as well as wider information about places to visit in Durham.
Like the rest of the World Heritage Site, the Visitor Centre will also be a working building and provide interactive experiences for visitors including exhibitions, performances and hands-on family activities. It will also be a base for Durham University's Institute of Medieval and Renaissance Studies. Durham Student Theatre, recently visited by Russell Crowe, will also have a presence in the Visitor Centre and will stage performances for visitors.
