Pope Benedict to visit Aquila earthquake zone
Pope Benedict has promised to visit survivors of the Aquila earthquake soon, and assured them of his prayers and concern.
Speaking during his general audience in St Peter's Square yesterday, he said: "You are not alone, the Pope is with you, sharing your pain and your worries",
"The Pope is praying for you, imploring the Lord's mercy for deceased, and for their loved ones and survivors the maternal comfort of Mary and the support of Christian hope".
According to Vatican Radio, Benedict XVI also praised "the promptness of authorities, security forces, volunteers and other operators in rescue efforts" and the generosity of Italians that is demonstrating that "solidarity is important in order to overcome such difficult trials".
Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi said the visit will take place soon, but no date has been set yet.
