London: thousands to demonstrate for peace
Christians of all denominations will be joining a national peace demonstration in London tomorrow. They will be calling on the government to end plans to attack Iraq, and asking for justice for Palestine. "The demonstration promises to be an historic event, " said the Stop the War Coalition organisers today. "People from all walks of life and from all ethnic and religious communities in Britain will join together to send a clear and powerful message to the British government - and to the world at large. "There is no justification for an attack on Iraq. There must be freedom for the Palestinians. In the interest of peace and justice across the Middle East, we implore the British government to change its policies forthwith, and to dissociate itself from the Bush regime. "No demonstration in recent memory has drawn such a wide and diverse array of endorsements. We urge the media to give the demonstration the coverage it deserves, and to paint a true picture of our growing and diverse movement and of the state of British public opinion." The Franciscan Family have arranged an inter-faith gathering to pray for justice, peace and reconciliation at St Martin in the Fields, Trafalgar Square starting at 12 noon. Campaigners will assemble at Embankment 12.30pm. The march should arrive in Hyde Park at 3pm, where there will be a number of speakers.
