London: Cardinal Hume Garden wins third award

The Basil Hume Quiet Garden at St Joseph's Church in Bunhill Row, near the Barbican in London has just received another award. The garden, designed by Simon Peter-Peter Stobart, which was opened in June this year, has been awarded first prize in the London in Bloom competition. Parish priest Fr Bruno Healy said: "The category for our prize was for a garden within a specific space and for a distinctive purpose. Our space was once a grey triangle of tarmac that was a carpark. Our distinctive purpose is that of a space where people may rest and reflect. It is especially good that our distinctive purpose has been recognised and marked out for an award. Hopefully more people will learn about this space and come and use and enjoy it." Just a few week's ago the Quiet Garden scooped the London Garden Society's cup and gilt medal for 'a garden display in a public place' - not tended by municipal services. Throughout the summer the garden with its water features and shaded seats, proved to be an oasis for City office workers. St Joseph's is currently running a series of prayer events.
