National gathering to support asylum seekers
A national gathering to support the rights of asylum seekers in the UK takes place in north London this Saturday. Church representatives, including Richard Solly from the Churches Commission for Racial Justice, Canon Nicholas Sagovsky from Westminster Abbey and Steve Cohen from Merton Churches Asylum Seekers Support Group will be joining legal representatives, social workers, health and other campaigners working to protect the rights of anyone affected by immigration legislation and policies, including 'anti-terrorism' measures. While Section 55 is being dropped by the government, campaigners warn that fresh legislation being considered could be even more draconian. Keynote speakers will be Ian Macdonald QC and lawyer Gareth Peirce. The event takes place from 10-5pm Trinity United Reformed Church, in Buck Street London NW1.
