London: lecture on 'searching for reconciliation in South Africa'
South African minister Professor Piet Meiring, who co-ordinated the faith communities' hearings for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, will lecture in London this week. 'Can Swords really be beaten into ploughshares? Mission and Reconciliation in the new South Africa,' is on Thursday 21 September. Professor Meiring was involved in the long struggle against apartheid, challenging it in the Dutch Reformed Church into which he was ordained in 1967. In 1996 he was invited to join Archbishop Desmond Tutu on the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission where he was tasked with the co-ordination of the faith communities' hearings. Prof Meiring has travelled to many parts of the world to lecture on issues of mission and reconciliation and to advise in local truth and reconciliation processes. He is Professor of Missiology at the University of Pretoria. Global Mission Network, part of Churches Together in Britain and Ireland, invites Media and Church Representatives to the lecture and discussion.
