Pax Christi: Making nonviolence our way of life in Church and world

Source: Pax Christi

Nonviolence Days of Action, organised by the Catholic Nonviolence Initiative, will be celebrated 21 September - 2 October.

Since its founding in 2016, the Catholic Nonviolence Initiative, a project of Pax Christi International, has significantly advanced the conversation and understanding of nonviolence and just peace in the Catholic Church and beyond. Pax Christi International and its Catholic Nonviolence Initiative has been honored to participate in the Vatican's Covid-19 commission. Essays have been contributed on the theme of structural violence revealed by the pandemic.

Pax Christi is encouraging solidarity actions around the globe to promote and celebrate nonviolence between 21 September (International Day of Peace) and 2 October (International Day of Nonviolence and Gandhi's birthday). The hope is that this becomes an annual event. These dates align with the Season of Creation, which extends from 1 September (Day of Prayer for creation) until 4 October (feast of St Francis of Assisi.) People are invited to study, pray, act and celebrate the power of nonviolence.

Suggestions:

Making active nonviolence our way of life in the Church and the world - study materials available.

Making the vow of nonviolence: We offer this as a focus for prayer and reflection to help individuals and communities affirm their intention and commitment to live a nonviolent life. It was created in the United States by Eileen Egan and Fr John Dear. It can be used privately, with a local peace community, as part of a parish liturgy, or any other way that suits you. Many have used the prayer at the start of each year as part of their New Year observance.

Last week, around 50 people from around the UK and some further afield completed five zoom sessions studying, 'Making nonviolence a part of life'. They have been encouraged to now form their own groups to run courses.
