Parishioners of St Theodore's Catholic church, Hampton, south-west London, raised the best part of £600 for CAFOD, on Saturday evening, with a Zimbabwean-themed dinner.

Donors paid for the ingredients and the church gave its facilities at no cost so that all proceeds could go to help the needy overseas. Parishioners and visitors from Zimbabwe described the country, sang and danced. Prizes in the raffle included a genuine mbire, a Zimbabwean musical instrument, and a some authentic leg rattles.

Zimbabwe was chosen as the focus of this event because it was the theme of the previous day's CAFOD Fast Day, and of the ecumenical World Day of Prayer, which was commemorated the day before the dinner at St Mary's Anglican church, Thames Street, Hampton.

Funds raised at the dinner were in addition to parishioners' donations for the Fast Day. Such gifts consist of the money saved by fasting for a Friday in Lent.
