New film promotes vocations discernment at Shrewsbury Cathedral

A video to promote vocations to the priesthood has been launched by the Diocese of Shrewsbury. The five-minute film was made over the course of several months by Christian Holden of St Anthony Communications and posted on the Vimeo video-sharing website on July 16. It The film features five men who took part in a year from 2018-2019 and who have all decided to enter priestly formation.

The Cathedral offers men the opportunity to discern their vocation in a community of prayer centred around the Most Holy Eucharist. The focus of the year is prayer and discernment towards a better understanding of the priesthood and a person's own particular calling. It offers a time for reflection, to grow in the spiritual life with regular spiritual direction and accompaniment, as well as opportunities for retreat, days of recollection and pilgrimage and study focused on the Scriptures, the Catechism of the Catholic Church and the lives of the Saints.

Rt Rev Mark Davies, Bishop of Shrewsbury, said: "This video offers more than information about a vocations initiative in Shrewsbury. The beauty of its filming opens a window for everyone to glimpse the Eucharistic heart of this discernment year at the Cathedral. I pray it will assist enquirers and also lead many more to pray for this initiative which has proved invaluable for the men who have come to spend time in this discernment community centred on the Holy Eucharist."

Fr Edmund Montgomery, the Vocations Director for the Diocese of Shrewsbury, said: "This new video will give a sense of what the year of discernment can offer men who are seriously considering the priesthood. The video offers enquirers a look inside the discernment house and year, showing the life of prayer, of community and of study.

"So often when we read about vocations or seminary formation we can only glimpse what might be offered to us, but with this video, future discerners can see what they might come to, hear from men who have benefited from their experiences, and perhaps see themselves as coming to the Cathedral themselves in the months ahead.

"We would offer an invitation for men who see this video to be in contact with me, to take the step forwards to seriously consider their vocation, and to see in what we offer a way to learn how best they can serve Our Lord and His Church."
