Jesuit Missions joining climate emergency lobby

Jesuit Missions will be joining the Climate Coalition and thousands of individuals from across the UK as they lobby their MP's outside parliament on Wednesday 26th June. Last week the UK government announced a net zero emissions target by 2050. But the time is now for government to take action and back this up with concrete plans.

Four years after Pope Francis spoke about the importance of caring for our common home in his encyclical Laudato Si, he has declared a climate emergency and has urged people to listen to the "increasingly desperate cries of the earth and of the poor."

Jesuit Missions Director, Paul Chitnis, said: "Climate Change is affecting people across the world, the increase in temperatures caused by global carbon emissions has led to an increased frequency of climate related natural disasters often affecting the poorest people in the world. We are inviting people to join us as we share our concerns with leaders who can make a difference."

Jesuit Missions invites you to join them on the day as they gather at the Jesuit offices in Mayfair, 114 Mount St, at 10.30am. Mr Tim Farron, MP for Westmorland and Lonsdale and Liberal Democrat spokesperson on environment, food and rural affairs will speak about the urgent need for action on climate change and tips on how to lobby our MP's. Jesuit Provincial Fr Damian Howard SJ will also speak about why climate change is such an important issue for the world of the Jesuits In Britain. Finally, Jesuit Missions staff will provide a briefing about their work across the world supporting communities affected by climate change as well as practical information about meeting with MPs.

Communications Officer, Stephanie Beech, said: "Come along and make some noise for climate. We are inviting people to bring along any recyclable rubbish they may have to join our rubbish band as we make our way to parliament."
