Kindertransport commemoration - video
Today marks 80 years since a delegation of community leaders went to meet with Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain. They appealed to him to permit the safe passage of mostly Jewish children facing Nazi persecution in Europe to Britain. It was only because of this civil action that the Kindertransport happened, a rescue effort that went on to bring 10,000 child refugees to safety in just a few months on the eve of World War Two.
Today, we are commemorating this special anniversary by bringing together child refugees who arrived here 80 years ago, their descendants, their surviving host families as well as some of the child refugees Safe Passage has helped access legal routes to safety in the past two years.
Join us on Facebook Live at 3pm, watch the Live Broadcast here we celebrate the contribution they have made to this country and recognise the heroic efforts of those who helped rescue them. (This should link to a recording afterwards).
In 1938 politicians were moved to act because civil society demanded action. We hope this important anniversary will inspire today's politicians to make sure Britain lives up to the legacy of the Kindertransport. Immigration Minister, Caroline Nokes, will be attending the event and we will be calling on her to offer protection to 10,000 child refugees from Europe and conflict regions over the next 10 years.
Last week we handed Lord Dubs' petition to Theresa May, asking her to grant 10,000 at-risk child refugees safe passage to Britain, just like the Kindertransport. Watch the Facebook video here
