Holy Land: Tent of Nations family win major peace award

Source: Methodist News

The World Methodist Council Peace Award 2017 has been given to the Nassar family of Bethlehem for their initiative, the Tent of Nations, located on their farm. The Award was presented to the family on 11 October 2018 at the farm. The criteria for the Award are courage, creativity, and consistency. The Nassar family has shown these qualities in abundance in their total commitment to non-violence.

The Nassar family has farmed 100 acres of land south of Bethlehem since 1916. Each generation of family members is connected to this land. They care about God's creation and take care of their small part of it. Dahar and Daoud's father, Bishara Nassar, was the second generation on the land, and he had a vision that the land would one day be a place where people from all over the world would come and experience something special, that people could learn a deeper understanding and connection to God's creation. Since 2002, Dahar and Daoud, the third generation of family on the land, have helped make this dream/vison a reality.

Because of the realities of the Israeli occupation, it has become harder for the family to remain on their farm. There are demolition orders on each dwelling, they have had trees uprooted several times, and they face roadblocks. Five illegal Israeli settlements surround the farm.

The World Methodist Council has recognized the work, resilience, and dedication of the Nassar family has in working the land they inherited. They are committed to faithful, non-violent acts of resistance to live and survive on the land.
