Monsignor Abou Khazen OFM Apostolic Vicar of Aleppo gives a harrowing report of conditions in Damascus, and Al-Ghouta, as the battle between the government army and Al-Nusra rebels rages in densely populated areas.
Speaking in this Association pro Terra Sancta (ATS) video, recorded last week during his visit to Italy, Mgr Abou Khazen says that for more than two months the residential areas of Damascus, have been bombed every day. Many young people died because the bombings took place mainly during school leaving hours.
He says: "The military forces are fighting jihadist groups in Al-Ghouta. Initially, attempts were made to let out armed men and civilians from the area. But ISIS, Al-Nusra and other affiliates refused and so now the military operation is under way." In a densely population civilian area many children, men and women have been killed or injured.
Describing the situation as a 'bloodbath' Mgr Khazen urges western powers to stop arming the rebel groups and to encourage all the parties to come to the negotiating table.
The Association pro Terra Sancta together with the Franciscans of the Custody, are working on the ground, giving shelter, food and medicines to the victims of war, and collaborating with various hospitals to provide care especially to women, children and the elderly.
