European Catholic Media Conference comes to Glasgow

The annual meeting of Media Officers and Spokespersons of the Catholic Bishops' Conferences of Europe (CCEE) meets in Glasgow from 16 - 19 November, the first time the gathering has been held in Scotland. Representatives from over 25 European Bishops' Conferences will attend to discuss the theme: 'Communicating the Christian message where commonly shared values are lacking.'

The meeting of Media Officers, was expanded on Thursday 17 November when delegates will be joined by Bishops responsible for communications across Europe. Archbishop Philip Tartaglia, President of the Bishops' Conference of Scotland welcomed Bishop Jose Ignacio Manila Aguirre, Bishop of San Sebastián and President of the CCEE Commission on Social Communications, together with other Bishops from across Europe.

Welcoming the delegates to Glasgow, Archbishop Philip Tartaglia, said: "On behalf of the Bishops Conference of Scotland and of the Archdiocese of Glasgow, I extend a warm welcome to Glasgow, my home town, and to Scotland, to the Annual Conference of the Media Officers and Spokespersons of the European Bishops' Conferences. The theme of this meeting, Communicating the Christian message where commonly shared values are lacking is a well-chosen and timely thematic for our times and for our situation in Scotland and in Europe."

Director of the Catholic Media Office, Peter Kearney said: "We are delighted to be able to host this important meeting in Scotland as we consider one of the greatest challenges we all face - how to communicate the Christian message to increasingly secular societies. This is a challenge we share with all of our colleagues across Europe, in many ways, it is made more difficult by the fact that for most of its history, Europe was the heart of Christendom."
