Central African Republic: 30 killed in attack on camp for displaced people
At least 30 people were killed in an attack on a camp for displaced people in the Bishopric of Kaga Bandoro, in the central area of the Central African Republic. The raid by former Seleka militiamen took place on 12 October. Initially Caritas reported that nine people had been killed, but later the figure increased. In addition to the dead, hospital sources say 47 were injured, nine of these are critically ill and have been transferred to hospital in the capital, Bangui.
A large part of the Bishopric IDP camp was set on fire, along several homes near Kaga Bandoro cathedral.
Government buildings and some NGOs were looted.
The violence erupted after the killing of a former Seleka who was trying to steal a generator from a local radio station with three accomplices.
"Despite the deployment of the French mission Sangaris and 12,000 UN peacekeepers of the UN Mission in the Central African Republic , in all these months measures have not been taken to disarm the various groups," a local spokesman said. "We know that former Seleka are re-organizing themselves in the north of the country and the worst is feared."
