Mexico is the most dangerous country in Latin America to be a Catholic priest, religious or church worker a new report shows. The study conducted by the Catholic Multimedia Center for the Mexican Bishops Conference, shows that between 1990 and 2014: one cardinal, 34 priests, one deacon, three religious, five lay workers and a Catholic journalist were killed. At least two more priests have disappeared.

The report points out that there has been an increase of these cases during the administration of the last government of Enrique Peña Nieto.

In 2014 alone, three priests have been murdered, and there was an attack against a layman was accompanying a priest. The latter survived a shootout, after the failed kidnapping attempt. In the last 12 months, two priests from the Archdiocese of Acapulco, Guerrero were killed by gangs. Another priest of the Diocese of Atlacomulco, State of Mexico, was killed during a robbery in the church where he was pastor.
