In the footsteps of Irish Immigrants - sponsored walk

A leading Irish Catholic charity in London will be accompanied by the Apostolic Nuncio on its annual fundraising walk along a famous famine route in Mayo in August.

The Irish Chaplaincy in Britain, which works with more than 1,000 vulnerable Irish people annually across its Irish Seniors, Irish Travellers and Irish Prisoners projects, will be joined by the Nuncio to Ireland, Archbishop Charles Brown, for the walk along the historic Great Western Greenway route between Mulranny and Newport in the west of the county.

This is the third time the Chaplaincy have walked this route for what its one of its principal annual fundraisers. It is the first time the Nuncio will be in attendance.

The Walk will be sponsored by the Irish Construction Workers Benevolent Fund, meaning that all of the money raised through individual sponsorships and donations will go directly to supporting the Chaplaincy’s work. The walk will take place on August 17, the full route is 18k with shorter routes available as an option.

The Walk is part of the “Year of Faith” celebrations in the Catholic Church.

Irish Chaplaincy spokesman and Down native Fr Gerry McFlynn said: "Anyone interested in participating in the walk, or sponsor walkers, is more than welcome."
