Holy Land: peace centre demolished for fifth time

Source: Amos Trust

Beit Arabiya, the home of Arabiya and Salim Shawamreh was demolished on Monday night, 23 January, for a fifth time by the Israeli Authorities.

Three houses as well as outhouses and animal pens were demolished by bulldozers accompanied by heavily armed soldiers as the 20 residents including young children looked on in horror.

The main house, Beit Arabiya (meaning Arabiya's House), was dedicated by the Shawamreh family to be used as a peace centre after it was demolished and rebuilt for the fourth time. ICAHD (Israeli Committee Against Home Demolitions) regularly uses the house to talk to groups as part of their tours, and Amos supporters have visited many times on our trips to the Holy Land.

The Amos Trust said: "Our thoughts and prayers are with Salim and Arabiya and their seven children and their families who, once again, find themselves homeless. We are in touch with ICAHD and will pass on news and details of actions you can take as we hear from them."

In the meantime, you can find out more information about the demolition on ICAHD's website as well as some helpful FAQs about the issue of home demolitions.
