Canada: The Hermitage

Saint Mary's Place of Solitude and Prayer is a diocesan hermitage in Newfoundland, Canada, where both men and women are welcomed to live the hermit life.

Two guest hermitages are available year-round for individuals and couples who seek to listen to their hearts in solitude and reflection in this peaceful and aesthetically beautiful location. There are no community activities. The hermits are available for spiritual direction, counseling or a directed retreat, if requested.

The hermitages are situated on land adjoining the Grand Codroy River which flows by the property and is accessible for swimming, canoeing, boating, kayaking and bird watching (the hermitage being part of a bird sanctuary) and, in winter, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

There are a number of beaches and hiking trails in the local area. Available for the use of the guests are: kayak, snowshoes and bicycles. For more information see: solitaryretreat.com/
