Italian Archbishop Velasio de Paolis CS, pontifical delegate for the Congregation of the Legionaries of Christ, has announced the names of the four counsellors who will assist him in the investigation of Regnum Christi, the lay branch of the Legionaries of Christ, Vatican Radio announced on Friday.
The counsellors are Fr Agostino Montan CSI, episcopal vicar for religious life in the diocese of Rome; Msgr Mario Marchesi, vicar general of the diocese of Cremona, Italy; Fr Gianfranco Ghirlanda SJ, former rector of Rome's Pontifical Gregorian University, and Bishop Brian Farrell of the Legion of Christ, secretary of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity. Archbishop Ricardo Blazquez of Valladolid, Spain, has been appointed as visitator for "Regnum Christi".
Archbishop De Paolis will lead a commission with the task of revising the order’s constitutions. All members of the order have been encouraged to take an active part in the reform.
The Archbishop was one of five bishops appointed by Pope Benedict to conduct a visitation of the Legionaries of Christ in 2009.
The two investigations were begun following revelations that the Legionaries’ founder, the late Father Marcial Maciel Degollado, had fathered children and sexually abused many seminarians.
The Vatican said at the time, that Fr Maciel's crimes reflected “a life devoid of scruples and of authentic religious sentiment,” and that his “most grave and objectively immoral conduct” called for “a path of profound revision”.
