YCW starts up new community in East London
A new project that will empower young people to become actively involved in their own communities has been launched this week by the Young Christian Workers and Impact. A team of three people will form the community, based in Limehouse in East London, working locally and nationally.
The project aims to call young people out of isolation - from poverty, unemployment, pressure at work/school, low esteem, racial prejudice, family situations, etc - into groups to enable them to examine their lives, reflect on their situations and take action to make a difference.
Using this famous method of See, Judge, Act, the team will develop a network of young leaders committed to promoting social inclusion of other young people in their area.
Danny Curtin, 27, President of the YCW said: "This project will reach out to many young people, especially those who are isolated in our parishes and local communities. We are particularly excited about living and working in East London and we know our presence will make a valuable contribution to the area."
"At present we work with 1000 young people across England and Wales. Now our vision is to create a network of thousands of young leaders, all putting their faith into action and making a real difference in their lives."
The project is being funded by a combination of donations, grants and support from dioceses and religious orders. Clare Davies, 25, National Treasurer said: "The commitment that the Church community has shown to this project demonstrates that people see the need to form young leaders. Our parishes and our local communities need young people who are actively engaged in their surroundings. This project will help make that difference and we are thankful to all our funders who have helped us to get started."
Two team member posts for the new community
are currently being advertised on the YXW website. (see address
below).
The YCW in England and Wales is part of the international coordination
of Young Christian Workers based in Rome. The YCW works in over
60 countries and has over a million members. They are regularly
in contact with three million young people. The YCW was founded
in Belgium by Fr (later Cardinal) Joseph Cardijn in 1928.
The organisation is run by young people for young people promoting their dignity and worth. It believes that each young person is worth more than all the gold in the world and is committed to the principles of the Gospel, seeking to be at the service of all the young.
