Millennium Cross dedication

The huge Millennium Cross was brought into the piazza outside the front doors of Westminster cathedral early Saturday morning (see Army to bear Millennium Cross, ICN, 17 November) and the last preparations were taking place yesterday in preparation for today's dedication service.

HRH the Duke of York will be principal guest at the dedication of the 15-metre high cross on Westminster Cathedral Piazza at 4.45pm today, Wednesday 29 November.

The Millennium Cross, an initiative of the late Cardinal Hume, will be dedicated by the Archbishops of Westminster and Canterbury and the Co-Presidents of Churches Together in England. More than 3,000 representatives from religious and civic life are expected to attend the outdoor service, many of whom have contributed to the £50,000 cost of the project.

Painted a dramatic red, the Millennium Cross will remain on the piazza for two years. Afterwards it will be removed to Ampleforth Abbey, where Cardinal Hume was abbot from 1963 to 1976.
