Liverpool hosts media training weekend for world youth day pilgrims
Last weekend, a group of about twenty young pilgrims from all across England and Wales gathered together at the Liverpool Archdiocesan Centre for Evangelisation for a Media Training Weekend to prepare for their meeting with the Pope at World Youth Day in Sydney this July. In total, the event is expected to boast the largest number of international visitors to Australia for a single event in the country's history. A group of 40 young people are travelling from Liverpool and the surrounding areas to Sydney for World Youth Day 2008.
The Media Training weekend was designed to equip the young 'Communications Officers', including three of Liverpool's Pilgrims, to be able to tell their own World Youth Day story by utilising the tools of old and new methods of communication. This included various workshops on how to write blogs, record and edit audio, and shoot and edit short films.
The Most Reverend Patrick Kelly, Archbishop of Liverpool, opened the weekend and commissioned the young people in their work during Sunday Mass. He said: "it was a privilege for me to meet those visiting Liverpool for the training days on Saturday and Sunday".
Rick Brewin, 20, who was at the weekend, said: 'The weekend was a great way to share our skills as well as learning new techniques and getting loads of great advice from those leading the workshops'
The Liverpool Pilgrims have been meeting every couple of months to prepare both practically and spiritually. Helen Currie, 18, commented: "As it's the first time I will have taken part in a World Youth Day the preparation meetings have really helped me and they've been a really great way to explore and understand the theme of this year's World Youth Day. It's been great to meet and get to know the other people travelling to Sydney from this area'.
Liverpool's 40 pilgrims will be taking part in voluntary community projects in the area of Maitland and Newcastle, approximately 2 hours north of Sydney, during the week before the Pope's Arrival.
