Voice trials for Liverpool Cathedral Choir

The annual voice trials for prospective Liverpool Cathedral Choristers take place this Saturday, for entry into the Cathedral Choir in September 2007.

Boys joining the Choir are aged between 7 and 10 (in September 07) and if selected then attend the Junior Choir School: Runnymede St Edward's School. In due course at 11+ they have an automatic transfer to St Edward's College. The two schools are situated side by side in Sandfield Park, West Derby.

Cathedral Choristership offers a unique educational and cultural experience. The Cathedral Choir not only maintains our regular Sunday and weekday sung services in the Cathedral, but provides music for a growing range of Archdiocesan and regional special services during year, and broadcasts frequently. Christmas Midnight Mass from the Cathedral was broadcast by BBC1 TV to an audience of over two million. The Choir also makes national and international tours and recordings.

Besides singing at services and concerts, the boys get the chance to go on tour to foreign parts, and take part in radio and television broadcasts. Recent tours have been made to Germany, Holland, Belgium, the United States and Canada and this last year the Choir travelled to Germany ending a successful tour by singing High Mass in Cologne Cathedral (Liverpool's twin city).

All the choristers learn at least one musical instrument and many learn two as well as having individual voice coaching.

Several former choristers have made it to professional level, in both the classical and popular music scenes as singers, instrumentalists and teachers of music. All choristers learn great self-discipline, how to work as part of a team and improve and extend their powers of concentration. These skills are a useful preparation for all careers, musical or not.
