TLS praises book on future of Church

This week's Times Literary Supplement features a review of The Future of the Catholic Church in Britain by Tom Horwood.

In his review, Fr Peter Cornwell suggests that "the Church sits on vast untapped resources of an increasingly well-educated and articulate laity". He writes that Horwood analyses what has gone wrong in the Church and "begins to show how things could be changed for the better". Fr Cornwell argues that there are "issues of power and structure" which cannot be dodged and which "may need Tom Horwood's cultural revolution".

Mr Horwood, who worked for the bishops from 1996 to 2002, published the book in response to Cardinal Murphy-O'Connor's call for "a lot more lay people to speak out". He argues for a strategic approach in tackling the challenges facing the Church. The book has generated lively discussion in the media, including the Times, Sunday Telegraph, Guardian and the Catholic press, and on websites.

This week's TLS also includes John Cornwell's review of Dan Kurzman's book on Pius XII and Adam Smyth on a new collection of essays entitled Religion in Revolutionary England.
