New Catholic theatre company is born
Robert Colquhoun
Tenten theatre, an innovative new Catholic theatre-in-education company, was launched in London's West End last night. The audience included Bishop Bernard Longley, MPs, teachers, writers and broadcasters.
The evening included a pacey performance
of BABIES by Martin O'Brien. Centering on two teenagers: Annie,
beautifully played by Sarah Raffio, and Joe, a fine performance
from Adam Baxter, this short, non-judgemental piece explores their
relationship and the ways they and their families respond to Annie's
crisis pregnancy. The conclusion is unexpected and dramatic.
The BABIES theatre project includes further resources for Key
stage 4 and sixth form students and has already been booked months
ahead by schools and institutions around the UK. The play is being
conducted in partnership with the charity LIFE. Most performances
include a discussion workshop with the actors and an interactive
session with a LIFE speaker. This aims to look at the responsibilities
of sexual activity and the implications of teenage pregnancy and
abortion.
BABIES is part of the One Life programme that aim to promote and advance the social, moral and spiritual education of children through professional theatre and resources.
In her presentation, Tenten trustee Sophie
Olivieri explained that One Life has ambitious targets for the
next few years. One project planned for this summer is
the Dead Man Walking Theatre Project, sponsored by the Diocese
of Hexham and Newcastle in collaboration with anti-death penalty
campaigner, Sr Helen Prejean.
Praising the company for using the powerful medium of theatre
to convey the Christian message, Westminster priest Father Reg
Dunkling said: "There is such a great need out there. I know
this company is going to grow and grow."
