Talk
on religion and secularism in public life at LSE
Professor Cristina Lafont will speak about religion and secularism
in the public sphere next Tuesday 17 June at the London School
of Economics and Political Science (LSE).
In a statement the LSE said: "The global revival of religion
has raised fundamental questions about its role in politics and
the claim that it serves as a principle of identity, indispensable
to the continuing survival of communities. Recent hostilities
between the Church of England and the Labour Party have brought
this debate to the forefront."
Cristina Lafont is professor of philosophy
at Northwestern University in the US. In her lecture, which is
part of the Forum for European Philosophy, Secularity and Value
annual lecture series, Professor Lafont will question how religion
fits into contemporary society, arguing for a democratic model
which affords equal treatment for all citizens, religious and
secular.
Religion and Secularism in the Public Sphere takes place on Tuesday
17 June from 6:30-8pm in the New Theatre, East Building, Houghton
Street, LSE, London WC2A. This event is free and open to all with
no ticket required. Entry is on a first come, first served basis.
