Archbishop Nichols encourages students to join 'Live Simply' campaign
Archbishop Vincent Nichols celebrated evening Mass, preached, and encouraged students to join the "Live Simply" campaign, during his annual visit to the University of Birmingham Catholic Chaplaincy, on Sunday, writes Peter Jennings.
The Archbishop of Birmingham was welcomed to Newman House, in Edgbaston, by the Chaplain, Fr Julian Green, who took up his appointment in early September, and Sr Anna O'Connor, his Assistant.
After Mass, Archbishop Nichols gave a talk to members of the Catholic Society, (CATHSOC), during which he spoke about the importance of the "Live Simply" initiative being launched on 26 November, the Feast of Christ The King.
Archbishop Nichols said: "To live more simply and in solidarity is a radical gesture against injustice throughout the world, but most important of all is to live spiritually."
He stressed: "To live more simply is to live more spiritually. Public culture in Britain today is aggressively secular and we must take on empty secularism."
The Archbishop then adroitly answered a number of searching questions about the Catholic Faith from members of the Catholic Society.
Afterwards, Angela Joyce, Chair of CATHSOC, a third year Geology student, said: "I am constantly encouraged by the energy and enthusiasm that I see in the Chaplaincy as each week it becomes increasingly student and spirit filled."
Angela, whose home parish is St Peter's,
Bradford, in the Diocese of Leeds, added: "It's a pleasure
and a privilege to be part of such a thriving community."
