Catholic college reaches agreement over historic house

Agreement has now been reached between St Mary's University College, Twickenham, London, and the Strawberry Hill Trust enabling the project involving the restoration of Walpole House to go ahead.

College principal Dr, Arthur Naylor said, "There was never any question around the lease of Walpole House itself. The issue related to additional educational space that the University College was asked to lease in a building that it continues to use and need for its own educational purposes and which is not part of the main restoration project.”

Walpole House dates back to 1700 when it was bought by Barbara Villiers, the Duchess of Cleveland and a former mistress of Charles II. It takes its name from Thomas Walpole, a cousin of Sir Robert Walpole, England’s first prime minister, who lived there from 1798 until 1803.
