Wonersh hosts major church singing workshop

St John's Seminary Wonersh, near Guildford, was alive with music last Saturday at the first Church Singing Workshop for parish choirs organised by liturgical music publishers, The Music Makers, and the seminary.

Led by Fr Gerard Bradley and Jeremy de Satgé, the day included a session dedicated to singing technique and the 100 strong choir then rehearsed a mixture of old and new music for Mass in the college chapel, with a strong emphasis on Latin and plainsong.

The organisers were delighted at the interest in the day, which was aimed at parishes within the dioceses of Southwark, Arundel & Brighton and Portsmouth, although some people attended from further afield. Further events will be organised in other parts of the country.

Fr John Boyle (Parish Priest of South Ashford, Kent) has put a piece about the workshop on his blog: http://south-ashford-priest.blogspot.com:80/2007/06/church-singing-workshop-at-st-johns.html

Jeremy de Satge from Music Makers, said: "I am very much wanting to take this workshop around the country and, if the response to this first one is anything to go by, then there is clearly a will from parish choirs for good singing."
