England's first Catholic university since Reformation

Undergraduates beginning their studies at St Mary's University College in Strawberry Hill, Twickenham will be the first students to receive a degree from an English Catholic university since the Reformation. St Mary's received its new title last year and was granted the power to issue degrees by the Privy Council this January.

"St Mary's has a long and proud tradition as a Roman Catholic place of learning where great emphasis is placed on the whole person. This tradition is being renewed with vigour and vision as we celebrate our University College title and look forward to full University status in the future, " said spokesman Revd Rob Marshall.

St Mary's has reported another overall increase in the number of applications from prospective students for 2007. UCAS figures show a 7.3% increase i on 2006.

"What is staggering is that the 2007 figure is almost 40% higher than the same figure just three years ago, which shows that the combination of our location, reputation and ethos is attracting more and more students to a wide range of courses," said Rev Marshall.

"I am really pleased to hear that more and more people are choosing to apply to study with us and we are confident of delivering quality teaching programmes, high levels of student satisfaction as well as an acknowledgement that each of our students has individual needs and issues which we seek to deal with as best we can," said Dr Arthur Naylor, Principal.

St Mary's was first established in Strawberry Hill in 1925, by the Vincentian Fathers as a men's teacher training college. Women were admitted for the first time in 1966.

The modern campus is set in extensive grounds around the 18th century Gothic mansion built by Sir Horace Walpole, making it one of the most attractive universities in the capltal.
