Preston: school's war dead to be remembered at last
The 56 former pupils of Preston Catholic College who lost their lives in the Second World War are to have a memorial dedicated to their memory this Remembrance Day. They will join the names of the college Old Boys and the parishioners of St Wilfrid's Church, Preston, who were killed in the First World War.
Parish priest, Fr Chris Dyckhoff SJ, said the memorial is long overdue. "We have a framed scroll of the names of the Old Boys which we put out on Remembrance Sunday, but we thought they really should be part of the memorial for all time. There is tremendous feeling among the Old Boys of the college and there are still surviving relatives-nephews, nieces and children-of some of those killed in World War II," he said.
Among them is Bishop Brian Noble of Shrewsbury, who is himself an alumnus of Preston Catholic College and whose uncle's name is included on the church memorial as one of those killed in the First World War. He will be the principal celebrant at the 11am Mass at St Wilfrid's Church on Sunday, 11 November, when the slate plaque will be unveiled.
Students from Stonyhurst College will
form a guard of honour at the Remembrance Sunday Mass and buglers
from Cardinal Newman College will play the Last Post.
