Pope
to visit Poland
Pope Benedict XVI plans to visit Poland next month, the Vatican
has announced.
The Holy Father will go to Warsaw, and the shrine of Czestochowa. He will also visit Wadowice, birthplace of the late Pope John Paul II, and Krakow, the city where the last Pope served as archbishop and priest.
Pope Benedict also plans to go to Auschwitz, following in the footsteps of Pope John Paul II, who visited the camp during his first trip home in 1979.
During his first month in office, Pope Benedict pledged to continue his predecessors' work towards Catholic-Jewish reconciliation.
Papal spokesman Archbishop Jozef Kowalczyk said: "Pope Benedict wants to pay homage to his predecessor... and honour the country, church, diocese, and hometown of John Paul II, which were so dear to him."
The trip, from 25 May to 28, will be his second foreign visit as Pope.
