Palazzola
welcomes guests
The Villa Palazola is a 13th century former convent perched high
above the eastern slope of Lake Albano, just 18 miles south of
Rome. Owned by the Venerable English College in Rome and consequently
by the dioceses of England and Wales, it has recently undergone
a major revamp and is now available for retreats and pilgrimages,
at very competitive prices.
There are spectacular views across the lake to Castelgandolfo, the Pope's summer residence. Average summer temperatures are a mild 25·C (77· F) with gentle breezes and refreshing natural lake waters.
Palazzola is surrounded by protected woods and excellent nature trails in the Regional Park, Castelli Romani. It is also near several towns and villages with vibrant traditions, gastronomy and folklore, like Ariccia, Rocca di Papa, Albano, Nemi, Marino, Genzano, and Frascati.
There are many ancient Roman remains near the Villa, including Albano's amphitheatre and praetorian gate, Septimus Severus' military camps and bathhouse. Just to the north, in Rocca di Papa, are Hannibal's Camps, the strategic panoramic location where the invading Carthaginian general's elephant infantry supposedly froze to death one unusually cold Roman winter.
The wooded area is most famous for being the mythical birthplace of Rome's twin founders, Romulus and Remus, who were suckled by a she-wolf in Alba Longa along the lake rim.
